| | Audism- The word (audism) is derived from two root words, Aud- and -ism. Audible means capable to hear, and -ism is a suffix word which means the system or the characteristic of people. (Random House Webster's College Dictionary. 1st ed. s.v.) Audism is the word that specifies the discrimination on the inability of hearing. Dr. Tom Humphries is the earliest known person who discussed the subject. Audist establishment- The audist establishment is one that misinforms and ill-educates people about deaf and hard of hearing people. It is misinformation about deaf and hard of hearing communities, deaf and hard of hearing identify, deaf and hard of hearing leaders, American Sign Language, sign languages from all over the world, and deaf and hard of hearing families. It appears that the audist wants to "fix or cure" deaf and hard of hearing people. This is a contradiction to the deaf and hard of hearing people and demonstrates a bias against the deaf and hard of hearing culture. Obviously, this promotes anger and outrage by the deaf and hard of hearing community. About 410 million to 631 million deaf and hard-of-hearing people all over the world who feel oppressed by the Audists. The deaf and hard of hearing community continue to attempt to promote quality education that allows the freedoms of choice to the deaf and hard of hearing people. To no longer allow the control over choices and demands of oralism to be pushed onto deaf and hard of hearing people it is imperative that key positions be held by the deaf and hard of hearing community. That Audist, speech therapist, audiologist, and otologist be a support system that function within the guidelines given to them by the deaf and hard of hearing community. It is by working together in a non-bias environment that promotes the education of the deaf and hard of hearing so they may be empowered to educate their communities freely and fairly. Audists- accordingly to Dr. Harlan Lane's The Mask of Benevolence: Disabling the Deaf Community, audists are people who discriminate against people who are incapable of hearing from Deaf culture people to late-deafened people who never met a single deaf person all her or his life before, Deaf culture, Deaf community, communication through sign languages, Deaf identity, and many more related to Deaf people in general. (Lane, Harlan. The Mask of Benevolence: Disabling the Deaf Community. New Edition. California: Dawn Sign Press, 1999.) | | | |
